BDNA - IT Visibility. Solved.

The Challenge
In one of the largest states in the nation, the Governor and State CIO mandated that all state agencies implement Green IT policies across their infrastructure. With an infrastructure of over 200,000 PC’s and 10,000 servers, spread across over 100 agencies, the first critical challenge was to establish a baseline of the current infrastructure and associated power metrics.

The Solution
The State’s Office of the CIO selected BDNA due to many critical factors:

Architecture: BDNA’s non-intrusive agentless approach was very well suited to gather data across many agencies’ infrastructure. The ability to capture data across dozens of locations, with minimal labor requirements, and using a single solution to gather comprehensive inventory information for servers, PC’s, printers, storage equipment and networking devices was key.

Unique catalog: The exclusive power and space information provided by BDNA Technopedia was critical in obtaining a trustworthy Green IT baseline

Speed: The State’s officers had established very tight timelines to gather the facts and kickstart the Green IT project.

The Impact
The information gathered with BDNA is being used to define the key goals of the statewide Green IT policy. Early estimates indicate that the state will save over $44 million in annual computer-hardware related power savings – while reducing carbon emissions by an astonishing 200,000 tons per year. The state is upgrading key equipment to use lower power consumption chips, increasing its sponsorship of mobile computing and instituting power management policies across its departments – all of which have long term financial and environmental
